Video: World on Fire by Sarah McLachlan

Posted by: RR on: 6 July 2009

This inspiring video reminds us to be more judicious with our finances. This is a classic from Sarah McLachlan.

I’m starting with the man in the mirror
I’m asking him to change his ways

And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself, and then make a change!
lyrics

Rest in peace MJ. Your musical talent and unique personality have inspired millions of people of all races, nationalities, and religions across the globe. You will certainly be remembered =)

Homeless to Harvard

(Brian Vander Brug/Los Angeles Times)

After spending her entire life on the streets with her mom and sister, Khadijah Williams, has finally found a home at Harvard University. This inspiring article from the LA Times tells of her struggle to make education a priority while overcoming adversities of the homeless life.

She knows nothing of her father or her mother’s past. She only knows that she was born in New York when her mom was 14 and while Khadijah was a toddler they moved to California. Since she was in third grade when she scored 99th percentile on a test, Khadijah has maintained her place as a top student. She’s disciplined her self to shut out all the noise and chaos of living on skid row to focus on her school work. Her academic pursuit could have been jeopardized by any possible hazard posed to a homeless person. She persisted on and now she earned a home for herself at Harvard where she will enjoy a full ride scholarship. Amazing. You go girl!

Obama speaks to the Muslim World

Posted by: RR on: 5 June 2009

Yesterday President Obama gave an impressive speech in Cairo about America’s involvement in the Middle East. He addressed key topics such as 9/11, the war in Iraq, and Israel-Palestine. More importantly he  made it clear that the United States is not at war with Islam, a widely held misconception in the Middle East.

I was personally impressed by this speech because he intertwined powerful quotes from holy scriptures and appealed to the notion of common humanity.

“…when a financial system weakens in one country, prosperity is hurt everywhere. When a new flu infects one human being, all are at risk. When one nation pursues a nuclear weapon, the risk of nuclear attack rises for all nations. When violent extremists operate in one stretch of mountains, people are endangered across an ocean. And when innocents in Bosnia and Darfur are slaughtered, that is a stain on our collective conscience. That is what it means to share this world in the 21st century. That is the responsibility we have to one another as human beings.” – President Barack Obama (June 4, 2009 in Cairo)
